Of course, if you’re not into plays you may want to stop by the playhouse anyway. “Children’s Letters to God,” Dracula” and Neil Simon’s “Fools” are examples of the wide range of genres the playhouse has covered. The playhouse was passed on to his son, Charley Ault Jr., and has grown into one of the premier community theaters in the region. The term “productive” lends a positive connotation to laziness. Section 12.8.4 of Cognitive Productivity is “Productive laziness (cognitive parsimony)”. (Kruglanski et al 2012 is mentioned in Cognitive Productivity.) Productive Laziness, Cognitive Parsimony, and Anytime Algorithms Perhaps this expression is sufficiently neutral to fulfill Galef’s requirements. Kruglanski et al used the term “cognitive miserliness” to refer to the tendency to conserve mental resources. In particular there is a quantitative concept of mental resources, which was later advocated by Luiz Pessoa in his excellent book, The Cognitive Emotional Brain. Notice that many theoretical concepts are involved here. Restraining forces include: competing goals (can’t do everything at the same time), the demands of the task, and the tendency to conserve mental resources. This in turn is a function of the importance of the task’s goal, and the amount of mental resources potentially available to the task. The former is the maximum amount of cognitive energy an individual is potentially willing to apply to a task. In sum, they posit that purposeful behaviour is conatively controlled by a potential driving force and a restraining force, which work in opposition to each other. J., Chen, X., Köpetz, C., Pierro, A., & Mannetti, L. However, Kruglanski and colleagues recently supplied a starting point in Kruglanski, A. (Compare also Kurt Lewin’s Field theory). Mental energy has been out of fashion in psychology for decades, perhaps as a result of Sigmund Freud’s failed attempts to develop a theory about it. Minimizing cognitive work calls for a concept of cognitive energy. Efficiency and Cognitive MiserlinessĪ concept in the neighbourhood of Galef’s target is efficiency. More generally, while one has to understand existing concepts and hence folk psychology, one cannot adequately fill these terminological and conceptual gaps without reference to theories developed from the designer stance. I will return to this (hopefully briefly) below. This calls for conceptual analysis, exploring logical topography, and exploring the space of possible mental designs. (In Section 3.3.3, “Cognitive miserliness and its antagonists”, of Cognitive Productivity: Using Knowledge to Become Profoundly Effective, and elsewhere in that book, I pointed several of them out.) More interestingly, there are several conceptual gaps in the logical topography of “conative-cognitive” theory. It’s not just a terminological gap, however. I agree there with her that there’s a gap. She acknowledges that “connotation creep” is a hard problem. She argues that we need a non-judgmental term for wanting to minimize work. She assumes it’s a perfectly legitimate preference to be “lazy”, i.e., to dislike work. In sum, Galef takes a relativistic utilitarian moral view: that a rational life is one in which one pursues one’s preferences. As this touches upon a key concept of my theory of meta-effectiveness, I thought I should write a quick response. On her blog and Twitter, one of my favourite podcast hosts, Julia Galef, argued that we need a non-judgmental term for “lazy”. I actually did a whole lot of work to try to bridge the gap and satisfy everyone. Testing for C++11 features on unsalvageable binary-only compilers from 2003. Testing compilers for ports that are already dead and have had no new ScummVM releases since 2015 ģ. Testing subsets of C++11 on platforms that no users actually use (again, I did the analysis and presented the data in 2017) Ģ. You can see some of this madness laid out in the page you linked:ġ. :-)Īny step forward here is good, but the main problem remains: the number of ports takes precedence over basically any other consideration by some long-time members (including the DFL), and the project suffers. You should maybe also reply to my emails. Thanks for taking the time to create an account on HN to reply to me. I use the lowest number since there’s no reason to think that someone would only intend to use engines starting with the letters A–G more than they would intend to use engines starting with the letters O–S, especially since the banner release in 2.0 was the SCI32 engine, and that was the one with 4 downloads. It’s a little hard to get an exact number since the port is split into several files the most downloaded Dreamcast file had 16 downloads and the least downloaded 4, after excluding people who were just batch downloading the whole directory of installers. Source: I was once a major contributor to ScummVM and tried unsuccessfully to fix this. I would, furthermore, argue that this leads to less portable code in the long run since these old ports force the project to be stuck using C++98, so there’s a whole bunch of undefined behaviour, race conditions, and other garbage code in ScummVM which compromises future compatibility and wouldn’t be possible if unsafe coding practices from the bad old days were prohibited. I ran analytics on web logs during the month after the ScummVM 2.0 release, and the Dreamcast port you mentioned accounted for 4 of 16,068 downloads. Most of these esoteric ports can only be compiled by custom ancient GCC binaries whose original source code is either lost to time or won’t compile on a contemporary compiler or CPU, and nobody actually uses them. It creates an unhealthy focus on how many ports there are rather than putting the focus on the preservation of games and the quality of the user experience. In my opinion, this is not actually a good thing. If you don't like the palette, just delete the palette.map file. Will have their colors randomly generated using the $colors selection. LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 is a hands-on, elementary science solution that develops science practices in the classroom through a robot-based learning system. With underfloor heating, radiators that take up a lot of space are superfluous. The floor and wall space is optimally used.In other words, these floors have a high heat transmission. Besides, self-levelling floors have a relatively low RC value. Precise estimates differ, because the energy saving differs per underfloor heating system, but companies can save on average 10-20 percent on their energy costs compared to traditional radiators. There is considerable savings on energy costs.A comfortable workplace keeps employees happy and is advantageous for productivity. That gives a continuous comfortable feeling. The heat is evenly distributed and remains constant. Underfloor heating and self-levelling floors have plenty of benefitsĭue to its efficient heat dissipation, underfloor heating offers many advantages in industrial areas: Where convection heat rises in the form of warm air, radiant heat mainly heats locally. Underfloor heating produces more radiant heat than radiators, while the latter mainly generate convection heat. In high rooms such as factories, company and production halls, floor heating has a more efficient heat output than traditional convection heating systems. In industrial spaces it is important to keep the heat where it is most needed, namely as close to the floor as possible. Better heat regulation with underfloor heating Pleasant, because this combination guarantees more comfort and is energy and space saving. Epoxy floors are, just like PU floors and trowel floors, feasible with underfloor heating. With underfloor heating you can make a room more sustainable, but are epoxy floors suitable for underfloor heating? In this case, you'd simply remove the radiators, and use electric heat for those rooms instead.Epoxy floors are often encountered in business premises that require a solid and durable surface. The system will come with a temperature sensor and control that is typically mounted in a wall box next to the light switches for the room. The mats can be custom made to the shape of your room, e.g. Electric radiant is available in mats that are layered with thinset between the subfloor and tile. One alternative you may want to consider is electric radiant heating. These may cost more and would likely change the level of your floor, but are worth considering. Correction : Actually, there are hydronic systems that can be installed above an original subfloor (inside a newly poured cement layer, under tile). Probably not a problem for your kitchen but may add some work for the upstairs bath. I don't think you can do that without access from underneath. For hot water radiant heat, you'll need to install PEX on the underside of the subfloor. You'll want to get a professional to assess whether this will require additional thermostats / control modules, or whether there's a simpler way to balance things. Changing the way a room is heated may take it out of balance with the rest of your home, leading it to get too hot or too cold. According to this piping schematic from the device that can both control your boiler and mix water for a lower-temperature section is called a "variable speed pump mixing control". So if you are keeping any radiators, your system will need to support running at multiple temperatures. Cast iron radiators are usually run at around 150 degrees F, which would be painfully hot to stand on. Because the radiant heating runs under your entire floor, it is typically run at a temperature similar to a hot summer day (around 85 degrees Fahrenheit). You may be able to use the existing radiator piping to some extent, but a number of other changes will be required: Notably, if a recipe calls for one cup of diced sun-dried tomatoes, simply chop pecans and add the nuts in place of the tomatoes. While a seemingly untraditional exchange, using pecans instead of sun-dried tomatoes as a topping or unaltered ingredient is a solid option. If you have beefsteak tomatoes, then fewer are required for the conversion rate. Yes you can! Sun-dried tomatoes have an extra concentrated flavor than fresh tomatoes, but if you have fresh tomatoes on hand, then using them as an alternative to sun-dried tomatoes is a good option.īut be cautious because fresh tomatoes have more water than sun-dried tomatoes do, which could impact your recipe.įurthermore, the intensity of tomato flavor will be less if you use fresh tomatoes versus sun-dried.įor about one ounce of sun-dried tomatoes, home cooks will need to use about ten ripe plum tomatoes. Fresh TomatoesĬan you substitute fresh tomatoes for sun dried? It is a delicious but sometimes overpowering ingredient.Įxcept for sun-dried potatoes, tamarind paste can also be a substitute for fire-roasted tomatoes. Measure cautiously add a small amount of paste to your recipe, then add more as needed. Notably, tamarind paste is gluten-free, so it is safe for those with celiacs. Using this ingredient as a replacement for sun-dried tomatoes will not impact your recipe. It has a sweet and tart taste, a similar flavor profile to sun-dried tomatoes. Tamarind paste is made from a fruit that grows in a pod on a tamarind tree and is usually used in traditional Thai dishes. A roasted red pepper is slightly sweet and has a charred flavor, giving the ingredient a similar depth to sun-dried tomatoes.Īt a one-to-one ratio exchange rate, this option is one of the best sun-dried tomatoes replacements. The two ingredients also look identical to one another for aesthetic purposes. It can be purchased on the international aisle of your grocery store, usually in a glass container by the sun-dried tomatoes.įor antipasto or bruschetta, red peppers will add their creative flavor and have a similar consistency to sun-dried tomatoes. Roasted red peppers are an excellent ingredient to interchange with sun-dried tomatoes. It is an excellent substitute for sun-dried tomatoes. Usually, home cooks keep canned tomatoes on hand, while sun-dried tomatoes are considered a specialty item, so using the canned option in a pinch is perfectly fine.įor ¼ cup of sun-dried tomatoes, use 1⅓ cups of drained canned tomatoes. If you do not have sun-dried tomatoes on hand, but enjoy the taste of tomatoes, then any canned tomatoes are the best replacement option.Įspecially when making a tomato-based sauce, using a canned tomato will offer the same essence of tomato but with less flavor intensity as a sun-dried tomato. What to Substitute for Sun-dried Tomatoes 1. However, what can you do if they’re not in season?ĭon’t worry, there are many substitutes for sun-fried tomatoes that will work just as well. You can even find sun-dried tomato pesto! These tomatoes are typically found in dishes like pasta, pizza, and salad dressing. Sun-dried tomatoes are one of the most popular ingredients in Italian cooking. I think it's just a bad joke from the devs. The first 4 fights (Forest-Cave-Winter-Storm) are fine, but the one with the fire giant has a lot of issues regarding where he's going to hit with the sword regarding the hit box of the shadow of the sword (Sometimes you are out of the shadow and he hits you anyway), also, the fire balls that drop from above lasts for a lot, it isn't weird to have two or three waves of fire balls around you at the same time, additionally, if the giant drops in the right place, he can cage you between him and the molten floor.Ī wider area between the giant and the projectiles would be a good idea if you don't want to change the duration of the burning floor.Īnother issue is that he pushes you away when he enters to his "dizzy" animation, he can push you to the molten floor and that's a big game-over.įinally, when in his dizzy animation, the sword (which is horizontal to the floor) should have no colition with Thora, this will make easier to reach his head, and I mention this because sometimes I've been trapped between the sword and molten floor all around me and I was unable to move anywhere. The spear power (The one you get in Musspelheim) should be more powerful in damage or have a charge of 3 by default since it's a pain to reach the island and doesn't feel rewarding enough. its most interesting level is Brokk's Forge, but you can't do anything with the so-called forge, a faster axe or an attack upgrade would've been nice since in the final battle you rely too much in speed and Mjölnir. only my luck did. While being artistically impressive, the low pacing (walking and fighting) of the game are a serious issue, for the first part of the campaign I was going around yawning all the time. I spent 6 hours on that fight and was finally able to get both no damage and no god power separately, but the strategy never changed. It has been fairly enjoyable learning how to do these fights, but Fe just felt unfair to me. I am currently working on my final two fights for the last of the trophies: Hagalaz - no damage and Odin - no god powers (the timing to destroy his spears is pretty absurd since you have to swing way early). This game relies primarily on positioning and predicting what will happen because you can't roll/run out of the way of anything that you don't see coming most of the time. Inconsistent boss behavior and such would be fine IF the character was actually fast enough to react to things. why does the roll have collision detection like this? if you don't change direction it will keep moving with you and damaging you. Also, if you roll into a dwarf the dwarf will STICK to you and start hitting you as you're trying to roll. Sometimes the shield still does damage to you even though you reflected it as well. Bouncing back the shield is completely impossible if you're on the top left, top right, left or right of the boss arena so you basically have to stand at the bottom and hope that a bunch of mallet chuckers aren't spawning on top of you when you're trying to reflect it at the boss. I can't count how many times I would eat a random hammer from an offscreen enemy while I was trying to damage the boss which is unfair in every respect. Luck plays way too much of a factor in doing these successfully which just makes it more infuriating than fun.įe is probably the most inconsistent boss of all of them with the adds spawning. I have been trying to do the trophies for this game on the PS4 and feel that the main issue with Valhalla mode and the no damage/no god power attempts is how utterly inconsistent these boss fights are. Originally posted by chaoticenigma:Just got the last achievement. Then when I ran out, I had to hope not to get hit while hitting the pillars for the last damage. I pretty much had to use a Thor + Freya to burst the health down to around half, then use a Loki to buy some time after a roar to do more hits of that. That or maybe allowing the projectiles to hurt the boss even without you having to knock them back since that'd allow for some little extra damage while you're trying to run away from the lots of enemies. The fight I think would have played a bit better if there were less summons, the bodies occasionally getting cleared, or even just having fewer stronger ones. Or trying to avoid the dwarves then finding a big one in the way of where I'm going and therefore walking into a thrown projectile. Just getting better or worse spawn positions that would affect how much I could hit with Thor + Freya combo. The shield on Fé is still risky or undoable at times because the dwarves might either try to hit you or you'll have a projectile thrown at you.Īlso, it didn't even feel like I was getting any better with the fight.
